Every decade of enterprise technology has automated something. ERP automated transactions. The internet automated distribution. Cloud and analytics automated measurement. What changed in the 2020s is that software began performing cognitive work — reading, drafting, reasoning over ambiguity and taking multi-step action.

This matters to a Board because cognitive work is where judgement, accountability and professional obligation live. Automating a transaction is an efficiency question. Automating judgement is a governance question.
